Fine Effort Level Best secured, her most Important success to date when she finished slightly better than her stable-mate, Greek Brigade. which had made all the pace, to win the September Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. Fitnesse was a fair third, four lengths back, ahead of Scimitar, which received a poor run. The former South Island pacer, Goldina, did well to finish fifth after breaking early in the race. Margaret's Own was second most of the way, but she disappointed by failing to show any dash In the straight. Level Best, which is owned by Messrs E. Montgomery and H. Kay. Is trained at Pukekohe by H. M. Allen, who also won the second leg of the totalisator double with the former Southland pacer, Brilliant Light. Level Best showed good form last season and in 14 starts she had four wins and four placing* for £l6BO In stakes. She Is a six-year-old mare bv the New Zealand Cup and free-for-all winner.
