ROWING
ANNUAL REPORT OF AVON CLUB
Although £675 was spent during the year on the purchase of an eight, a plywood four, and oars, the financial position of the Avon Rowing Club is very satisfactory, according to the report to be presented at the club’s annual general meeting. The building fund is steadily increasing, but the committee hopes that a large amount will be raised during the coming year to enable the building of a boathouse at Kerr’s Reach.
The membership of the club now stands at 155, of whom 53 are active oarsmen. The club was unsuccessful at the Centennial and New Zealand Championship Regattas, but later in the season a crew was selected to represent Canterbury in the inter-provincial eights contest ■at Wellington. That race, however, had to be abandoned because of the weather. The committee reports that the club is strong at present, but will remain so only as long as younger oarsmen are joining it, and states that as many of the members are making their way to higher classes it is essential that the club's numbers be increased this season.
