LOADING OF MEAT AT GISBORNE

WATERSIDERS PRAISED

(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, September 17. The roadstead loading trial of the Napier Star, the first overseas liner to visit Gisborne since 1942, was completed on Saturday with every indication of satisfaction on the part of the Blue Star Line. The ship loaded about 42.000 freight carcasses of meat for the United Kingdom, Meat was loaded out from the freezing works in the early hours of each morning into lighters which were ready for an eight o’clock start by watersiders, who transhipped from the lighters to the Napier- Star. The union members spent 18 out of every 24 hours in the roadstead.

Captain D. R. Henderson, marine superintendent of the Blue Star Line, in a letter to the watersiders, recorded appreciation of their great effort in loading the carcasses. “We realise that space did not permit you to work as fast as you could have done, and we hope that your next ship will be able to give you big, wide-open holds,” he said. "I have been most impressed with the very cheerful co-operation given by all the men during this loading.”
