Japan To Export Raw Materials

(Rec. 7.25 p.m.) SYDNEY. Sept 16. After months of research, eight Australian companies have completed arrangements for importing Japanese raw materials and goods worth £27,000,000 during the next 12 months. In addition to vital raw materials they were offered “Scotch” whisky, specially matured for six years in Japan, at 8s 9d a bottle, bicycles, complete with tool kit. extra saddle and luggage carrier, for £9 2s Bd, cigarette lighters for Is 3d, spring mattresses for £3 7s 6d to £7, electric lawnmowers for £9. and silk ties for Is 3d. The firms with which the Australian companies have made the deals are off-snoots of the Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo. Yasuda, and other big combines which were supposed to have been liquidated during the occupation. Some Australians claim they have been streamlined by American efficiency and salesmanship and revitalised with American capital.
