OTAGO BEATS SOUTHLAND

GAME AT CARISBROOK

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 16.

The Otago Rugby representatives proved too strong for Southland, and for the second time this season won against its old rivals at Carisbrook yesterday. The score was 15-9. The margin might have been greater but for faulty handling at critical moments. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, but the concerted efforts of both sides were less effective than usual. The most enterprising back on the ground was A. L. Wilson, the Southland first fiveeighths, who made some excellent runs. Otago was without L. S. Haig for most of the game. Haig retired with a leg injury. The forward play was of the solid type expected in these matches, although both packs showed signs of tiring towards the finish. The loose rushes of the Southland forwards paved the way for a fine rally in the second half, but the Otago cover defence was generally too strong. For Otago, tries were scored by A. R. Haig, R. D. Darracott. and R. A. Matchett. R. H. BeU kicked a goal from a mark, and R. W. Orr potted a goal. R. A. Harper scored two tries for Southland, and A. L. Wilson kicked a goal from a penalty There was a crowd of about 22,000 at the match.
