Professor Oliphant Cancels Visit

(Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept, 16. The Australian atomic authority. Professor M. Oliphant, has been forced to cancel his projected visit to the United States because a visa for his entry into the United States has not yet been granted. Professor Oliphant was invited to attend a conference beginning next Monday in Chicago on questions of nuclear

fission, and was to read a paper there. He applied for a visa two months ago, but has received no reply. Neither Professor Oliphant nor the United States Ambassador' to Australia (Mr Pete Jarman) will discuss the matter.

Professor Oliphant, who was born in Australia in 1901, has written a number of papers on electricity in gases, surface properties and nuclear physics. He was appointed last year to the position of Director of the Research School of Physical Sciences, Australian National University. Ho was senior exhibitioner at Trinitv College, Cambridge, in 1929. and Poynting Professor of Physics, University of Birmingham, from 1937 to 1950.
