COMPTON MAKES 79 AT HASTINGS
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 1. Denis Compton, captaining an England eleven, batted brilliantly on the first day of a match against South Africa at Hastings to-day In 70 minutes he hit 79 of his side’s total of 171 for three wickets and was still unbeaten when rain stopped play for the day.
