VICE-PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA
MRS PERON NOT TO STAND.
(Rec, 8.30 p.m.) BUENOS AIRES, -September 1. Mrs Evita Peron announced in a broadcast last night that she would not stand for the Vice-Presidency of Argentina in the election on September 11. She said she had arrived at her decision of her own free will. Mrs Person received the Peror„.sta Party's nomination after a huge rally on August 22 when her husband, General Juan Peron, was nominated for a second term as President. She delayed acceptance of the nomination because of opposition from some quarters. The party last night nominated Mr Hortensio Quijano, the present VicePresident, for re-election. Mrs Peron’s decision was reached after a two-nour secret session of the party’s supreme council. Seventeen Congressmen from Buenos Aires Province resigned in protest against Mrs Peron’s nomination. They are now expected to withdraw their resignations. There was also opposition to Mrs Peron on the ground that she was not old enough for the position. The Constitution requires candidates for top Governmental positions to be at least 30. The Argentine “Who’s Who” lists Mrs Peron’s age as 29.
