FRANK BELWIN AT HALSWELL

PROMISING NORTH ISLAND TROTTER Frank Belwin, one of the most [promising young trotters seen out towards the end of last season in the North Island, is the latest addition to J. Young’s team at Halswell. Young won the two main trotters’ races at the recent Addington meeting with Single Task and Gay Belwin, while another member of the team, Indomitable, was runner-up to Precaution in the Addington Trotting Stakes. Other trotters in Dalcassian and Implacable (a half-brother to Haughty) have been entered for the New Brighton meeting on Saturday. Frank Belwin, which was trained at Mangere by J. Elliot for Mr F. Whitehead, had only four stars last season and he won at his two final appearances. On the first day of the winter meeting at Te Awamutu he beat Flicka Boy and Pearl’s Pride in the City Handicap after making all the pace and the following Saturday he was equally impressive when he beat Pearl’s Pride and Cadogan in the Awapuni Handicap. Frank Belwin is a five-year-old gelding by Worthy Belwin (the sire of Gay Belwin) from Bessie Bingen, by Nelson Bingen from the imported Peter the Great mare. Berthabell, ancestress of a large number of winners. Bessie Bingen was also the dam of Bessie Parrish, Lady Bunker (the dam of Maxee), Contender, Not Quite and Belmoral. Frank Belwin can be expected to develop worthwhile form under Young’s guidance. Dillon's Fortune

The Dillon Hall gelding, Dillon's. Fortune, which was formerly trained at Gore, is now with C. R. Berkett, and he will probably have his first start from his new quarters at .the New Brighton meeting on Saturday. Dillon's Fortune is bred to go a long way as his dam, Erin’s Fortune, is out of Misfortune, founder of an outstanding winning family. He is a half-brother to Loyal Peter, Erinack. Sea Fortune, Impossible, Roulette, and others. Novice Winners

Thirteen horses, which started racing as novices last season, won more than £lOOO. The list is headed by Riviera, the best three-year-old of the year, which earned £2385. Forward, the leading two-year-old, is next with £2085, and then come Secret Mission, £1880; Adorian, £1782 10s; Glen Star (T.), £1593 10s; Pleasant Smile, £1530; Thelma Globe, £1405; Tiberius, £1310; Radiant Night, £1192 10s; White Angel. £llBl 10s; Archaic, £1045; First Victory, £1015; True Parrish, £lOO2 10s. Most of the horses in the above list are above average and they should be worth following this season.

Baby Grand Baby Grand and Gung-Ho, which it was intended to send to Australia several weeks ago, are to Join G. Gray's Epsom team, and they will probably race at the Auckland meeting next month. Both have done plenty of work. Baby Grand has not won since he beat Positive and Black Machine in the Farewell Handicap at Forbury Park in October, 1949. Baby Grand is a 10-year-old gelding by Lusty Volo from Mountain Jewel, and he is owned by Mr C. Over. Gung-Ho, which did not race last season, has not won since he beat Lady Averil over two miles at Epsom in March, 1946. He is an eight-year-old gelding by Josedale Grattan from Stenographer, by Frank Worthy. Both horses are at an age where little improvement can be expected. New Brighton Club Withdrawals for all events at the New Brighton Trotting Club's spring meeting to be held on Saturday next, close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. Advt.
