BIG MAJORITIES IN ELECTION
MRS RATANA HEADS LIST 12 OF NATIONAL PARTY WITH MORE THAN 4000 Mrs I. M. Ratana (Labour, Western Maori) had the biggest majority, 6772, in the preliminary count on Saturday, and Mr W. S. Goosman (National, Piako), who headed the list in 1949, was second with 5917. Miss M. B. Howard (Labour, Sydenham), who had the biggest majority in 1946 and
dropped to fourth on the list at the last election, was twelfth on Saturday, with 4130. Twelve National Party candidates had majorities of more than 4000. compared with 11 in 1949, and the Labour Party had three, two fewer than in 1949.
