TIMARU

Mr C. I* Carr, who has represented the Timaru electorate since 1928, has again Won the seat, but with a possible smaller majority than in 1949. The total votes counted in his favour were 6561. Mr W. L. Richards, the National Party candidate, polled 5908, giving Mr Carr a majority at present of 653. In 1949 his final majority was 832 in a heavier poll. The National Party made a strong bid to win the Timaru seat, but the electorate has long been acknowledged to be Labour in sympathy. The main surprise was the extent to which Mr Carr’s majority was reduced. The public opinion generally held during the campaign was that Mr Richards would be at least 1000 votes behind Mr Carr. A total of 12,625 persons voted in Timaru as against 13,976 (final figures) in 1949. In the last election the roll number was 14.976; this election It was 16,878, making the poll considerably lighter than in 1949.
