SHEEP FOR HIGH COUNTRY

Mr Peter Newton writes: The opinions of Mr E. M. Relph are a valuable and interesting contribution and his figures on analysis prove to be a fine case for the Merino. His submission. that of the halfbred and the Corriedale the former is still the popular choice for high country conditions, is of course obvious. Indeed, apart from the Merino it can almost be said that it is the only choice and it is this fact that prompted me to express my views. The merits of the Merino and halfbred are truly admitted but surely the mere fact that they have continued to give general satisfaction is not sufficient to deter us from attempting further achievements. To mv mind anv experiment on these lines is to be commended and the Ensors in striving to breed a Corriedale suitable for high country conditions are doing the industry a service which may well prove to be of real value.
