LAWN TENNIS U.S. SINGLES TITLES

MCGREGOR AND ROSE BEATEN BRITISH WOMEN REACH QUARTER-FINALS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 30 Frank Sedgman, of Australia, was the only foreign player remaining in the United States men's lawn tennis singles championship after play at Forest Hills today, but three British women entered the quarter-finals of the women's singles. Miss Kay Tuckey and Mrs Jean WalkerSmith, two of the British players, won hard third round matches to-day against the Americans, Miss Beverly Baker and Mrs B. Lewis, respectively. Miss Jean Quertier, of Britain, had qualified earlier in the week.

Two Australians were beaten in the fourth round of the men's singles. Ken McGregor lost to Victor Seixas in a classic four-set match, and Mervyn Rose was beaten by Budge Patty in another fourset match—a tame affair.

The margin between McGregor and Seixas was extremely small. Their thrilling rallies, which produced a remarkable number of deuce games, kept the gallery of 10,000 • tense with excitement for more than two hours and • quarter. The game between the defending champion, Art Larsen, and Hamilton Richardson, the 1950 junior champion, had to be postponed until to-morrow because of darkness. A leg infection forced the top-seeded American player. Dick Savitt, to postpone his match against Straight Clark. If he cannot play to-morrow he wiU default.

The first big upset of the women's championship singles came when Mrs Magda Rurac beat the third-seeded player, Mrs Pat Todd. Results were:—

Men's Singles.—Fourth round: Seixas beat McGregor, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4; Patty beat Rose, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5; Flam beat Moylan, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5; Larsen against Richardson, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 8-8 (unfinished).
