WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Bryndwr.—Mrs A. C. Harris presided over an excellent attendance at the August meeting of the Bryndwr Women’s Institute. It was announced that the institute would be represented at the music leadership school and the arts and crafts school, organised by the Adult Education Department of Canterbury University College. A practical demonstration of keep fit exercises was given by Mesdames Lockwood and Page. During the afternoon the Glee Club sang a bracket of songs. Competitions resultedhyacinths in fibre: Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs W. Murray 2. Loaf of bread: Mrs Beagley 1. Soft toy: Mrs A. Smith 1. Mrs Beagley 2. Sumner. —Mrs C. Fenwick presided over a large attendance at the mnothly meeting of the Sumner Women’s Institute. It was decided to support a recommendation that all women be encouraged to apply for inclusion on juries. One new member was welcomed. Mrs Snpitn (Mairehau) gave a demonstration on the recovering of old umbrellas. Competitions results were:—miniature garden: Mrs Mauger 1, Mrs Brocherie 2, Miss Burson 3. Bowl of artificial flowers: Mrs Mauger. Ashley.—Mrs Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the Ashley Women’s Institute One new member was enrolled. Mrs Rennie was the guest speaker and demonstrator. A sales table was held in aid of the institute's funds. Monthly competitions resulted as follows:—best bloom: Mrs Macann 1, Mrs Fraser 2, Mrs Smith 3 Jar preserved beans: Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Drake 2, Mrs Crowe 3. Jar apple jelly: Mrs Crowe 1. Mrs Macann 2. North Canterbury Federation.—Final arrangements for the half-yearly meeting at Waikari in October were made at a meeting of tire executive of the North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes. Mrs Blunden presided and welcomed Mrs Tapp, Dominion councillor, and Mrs McKeegan. secretary of the housekeeper scheme. A letter in appreciation of the help given to them and of the welcome on their arrival in Eiffelton was received from a Greek family. Mrs Blunden expressed her thanks to all members of Women's Institutes in North Canterbury who had assisted in their rehabilitation.

Springston.—Mrs J. R. Tyson presided at the twentieth birthday party of the Springston Women’s Institute. A programme of music, dancing, and elocution was given. The birthday cake was given by Mrs N. Buckley and iced by Mrs M. W. Dickie. The candles were lit by Mrs Murphy and Mrs J. A. Benny, and blown out by Miss M. Moore. The cake was cut by Mrs Benny. Prizes won during the year were presented by Mrs Mcßae, of the Canterbury executive, as follows: most points: Mrs J. T. Moore. Most points in blooms: Mrs J. T. Moore 1, Mrs J. C. Reesby 2, Mrs J. W. Marshall 3. Decorative: Mrs J. T. Moore. Cooking: Mrs M. W. Dickie. Crafts: Mrs W. Mounce.

Hornby.—There was a good attendance of members at the July meeting of the Hornby Women's Institute. Mrs E. B. Thompson presided. Omlhi.—Two new members were welcomed by Mrs Croft at the August meeting of the Omihi Women’s Institute. An afternoon social was arranged for the September meeting. Competition results were as follows:—large bloom: Mrs Sloss 1, Mrs Campbell 2. Small bloom: Mrs Stackhouse 1 and 2. Sponge roll. Mrs Stackhouse 1, Mrs Wilke 2. Lake Coleridge.—The twentieth birthday of the Lake Coleridge Women’s Institute was celebrated by an afternoon party. Visitors were welcomed by the president (Mrs McLellan). Members of the Sheffield Women’s Institute presented a play. Mrs Wright, a member of the Canterbury executive, lit the candles on the cake. They were blown out by Mrs McLellan, Mrs Bull, and Mrs Grey. The cake was cut by Mrs Hart, a foundation member. Competitions were won by Mrs Thurston and Mrs Urquhart.

Sefton-Kowhal. —Mrs L. McGowan presided at the August meeting of the Sef-ton-Kowhai Women’s Institute. A demonstration of making paper flowers was given by Mrs Wilkinson.
