CUSTOMS RETURNS

BIG INCREASE IN REVENUE

Revenue collected by the Customs Department in Christchurch last month and in the first five months of the present financial year, was considerably greater than in the corresponding periods of last year. The amount collected last month was £650.346, compared with £518,5:2 last August, and for the first five months of the present financial period the total was £2.741,263, nearly £452,000 greater than the £2,289,301 collected in the same period of last year.

The returns for last month, with August, 1950, figures in paienthesis, are:—customs and excise. £408,840 (£325,481)petrol at 6d, £35,914 (£35.745); tyres. £902 (£461); sales tax. £203.607 (£152,042); light dues, £938 (£651); export levy, hides, (£4040): mis ellaneous, £145 (£112): totals. £650,348 (£518,532). The details for the first five months of this financial year, with last year's figures in parenthesis, are:—customs and excise, £1,610,241 (£1.340.797); petrol at 6d. £198,087 (£168,213); tyres. £2573 (£1814); sales tax. £926,578 (£748,559); light dues, £2924 (£4055); export levy, hides. (£25,448); miscellaneous. £BBO (£415); totals. £2,741.263 (£2 289,301). AUCKLAND Total customs revenue col'ected at Auckland during August was £1,536,456. compared with £1,215,901 in the same month last year. Details were as follows, the amounts for August. 1950. being in parenthesis:—customs, £848,695 (£698,939); petrol tax. £116,948 <£111,668); tyre duty, £639 (£2044); sales tax, £570,174 (£403.250).
