COMMITTEE HELD UNACCEPTABLE
REPRESENTATION SOUGHT FOR PARENTS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. The committee which was to examine facilities provided for intellectually handicapped children was not acceptable in its present form to parents, said Mr H. S. Anyon, president of the New Zealand committee of the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Parents’ Association. Mr Anyon said the association was pleased the Government had taken notice of its petition, but considered that parent representation on the committee was absolutely essential “By making this a fully departmental committee the Government has drawn an iron curtain before the parents who are seeking a way out of their difficulties," he continued. Parent representation had been sought in the petition, and some adjustment would have to be made before the committee was acceptable. A strong protest would be sent by the association to the Prime Minister about the constitution of the committee. No consultations had been held with parents, and they were not prepared to take “just what was handed out” without protest. Mr Anyon concluded.
