RECOGNITION OF PEKING

U.S. Action Urged By Judge (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO. August 30. The United States should recognise the Peking Communist Government and thus exploit the mounting friction between Peking and Russia, said Judge William Douglas, of the United States Supreme Court, in an interview. Judge Douglas, who has just returned from a trip along the southern frontiers of Russia, said the recognition of Peking would give the free world a real political victory, as it would capitalise on the present struggle between the Chinese national aims and the Russian drive for a Far Eastern hegemony. Tensions between the Chinese and the Russians were manifest, even in remote provinces like Sinkiang, where Soviet troops were imposing Russian control on the people. Judge Douglas said.

Political settlement with Peking would swing the whole pendulum of Asiatic politics away from the Russians and back towards the Western world. "The United States must start formulating a foreign policy in terms of ideas not dollars.” Judge Douglas added.
