SUEZ BLOCKADE BY EGYPT
Security Council Delays Vote (N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 29. The Security Council to-day postponed expressing its condemnation of the Egyptian blockade of the Suez Canal because the Soviet Union asked for more time and threatened to use the veto if the time was not granted. z The Council was prepared to vote on a resolution condemning the blockade and asking Egypt to lift it immediately. The Soviet delegate (Mr Semyon Tsarapkin,) who had remained silent throughout the meeting, suddenly declared he had remarks to make but needed more time. The Council first voted against a postponement, but when Mr Tsarapkin hinted he might use the veto unless the delay was granted, the Council reversed its stand and agreed to adjourn until September 1. Earlier, Fawzi Bey, the Egyptian delegate, expressed deep regret that certain members of the Council persisted in voting on the resolution although they were the interested parties in the dispute, which prevents Israel-bound shipping from using the Suez Canal.
