SICK VOTING

PROCEDURE IN HOSPITALS Voting by persons eligible to cast sick votes started yesterday. Under the general supervision of the returning officers for the electorates in which the institutions are situated, the work of recording votes in Christchurch hospitals, homes for the aged, and other institutions, proceeded smoothly yesterday.

The biggest demand of sick votes in Christchurch is at the Christchurch Hospital, which is in the Fendalton electorate. Many of the patients voting here come from other electorates, which adds to the work of the returning officer’s staff.

Postal ballot papers are issued and each patient records his vote in the presence of a witness, who may be a Justice of the Peace, a registered medical practitioner, a registered nurse, a solicitor, a person in Government employment, or certain other persons authorised by the returning officer.
