£2263 STOLEN BY ACCOUNTANT

SENTENCE OF TWO YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT (New Zealand Press Association) «r-n- , AUCKLAND, August 30. William Walker, a public accountant, aged 32, of Rotorua, was sentenced in the Supreme Court to-day to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing £2263. It was distressing to deal with a case such as Walker’s, said Mr Justice Adams. The prisoner was entitled to credit for bringing himself up to the status of a public accountant after leaving school at 13 and serving five years in the armed forces. “Nevertheless, you have been guilty of deliberate and systematic stealing on a very large scale,” said his Honour. “You committed upwards of 40 thefts extending over a period of 20 months.”

Walker committed the thefts from a man who employed him to look after his books. He was given the maximum sentence.
