CENTRAL MISSION PRAISED
WORK OF METHODIST CHURCH SUCCESSFUL FIREWOOD SCHEME Complete satisfaction with and appreciation of the work carried out by the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission during the short period in which it had been in operation was expressed by members of the annual synod of the Methodist Church in North Canterbury yesterday. The mission was established in February, and is conducted bv the Rev. W. E. Falkingham, who holds the position of superintendent.
The synod recorded its appreciation of the willing voluntary service given by members of the Master Carriers’ Association, the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, the North Canterbury Men’s Fellowship Movement, the Young Mens Christian Association, the Optimists’ Club, the Mayor’s Coal and Blanket Committee, and all other workers who made it possible for the mission to carry out its firewood scheme for needy pensioners during the recent fuel shortage. A total of 6000 sacks of firewood were distributed during the shortage. The future policy of the mission was to establish “eventide homes,” Maori hostels and a young people’s club, and eventually to buy a building for the permanent home of the mission.
Mr Falkingham reported that the Maoris in the district had approached the mission, asking that youth hostels be established, and after consultation with officials, serious consideration was being given to the establishment of a hostel.
Two bequests had already been promised to the mission, one of £lOOO and a property, said Mr Falkingham. In this formative stage the progress evident has been made possible by the generosity of many business firms and individuals,” Mr Falkingham added.
