YOUNG CHARLES IN FORM

U. SCOTT STALLION’S

PROSPECTS Judging from his two sterling performances at Addington last Saturday, Young Charles will develop highclass form this season. Young Charles dead-heated with Te Maru in the Wildwood Handicap and three races later, he finished on gamely for third in the Farewell Free-for-all.

In the Wildwood Handicap he was slow away from the 36 yards mark, but he gradually made up ground to be challenging the leaders at the end of one mile. He raced wide out on the bend going out of the straight, with six furlongs to run, and he went into the lead near the four. It was expected that, when he was joined by Te Maru near the straight entrance he would drop out, but he fought on gamely to force a dead-heat. In the free-for-all he was again slow away, and he finished very fast in the straight to be third to Fortuna and Prince Hall.

C. R. Berkett has Young Charles in splendid order, and he will be in demand when next he appears. He is now on a~ 4min 24eec mark for two miles, and it is doubtful whether there will be enough opportunities for him to qualify for this year’s Cup. A very high opinion has been neld of Young Charles since he started racing as a two-year-old, when he was the best horse of his age. His successes included the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes and the Canterbury Park Juvenile Handicap. He was narrowly beaten by Farlena in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes. In the next year, he beat Soangetaha in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes, was second to Burns Night in the New Zealand Derby, and was second to Soangetaha in the Great Northern Derby. He was off the scene until the Ashburton meeting in June, when he won the New Zealand Futurity Stakes and the All Aged Stakes.

In the early part of last season Young Charles disappointed. He had his first win in the Farewell Handicap at Forbury Park in May, when he beat Maori Home and Morano after appearing out of the contest with three furlongs to run. He then beat Walnut Hall and Johnny Globe at Addington before finishing second to Soangetaha in the AU Aged Stakes at Ashburton. Altogether, Young Charles has contested 19 races for 10 wins. 10 placing!, and <7677 10s in stakes. By U. Scott, he is out of Aurie's Star. He is owned by Mr R. Mayne, of Christchurch. He will probably have his next races in the free-for-all events at the Wellington spring meeting, and should more than pay his way.

At Invercargill Monty Jason is now being trained at Invercargill by J. J. Burke. The Dillon Hall stallion had his own ideas' about racing, and seldom left; the mark correctly. He became very sour towards the end of last season, and in some of his races ho refused to leave the barrier at all. Monty Jason had an abundance of ability, and if Burke can induce him to race solidly he should win his way to a very tight mark.

Brilliant Light The Brilliant Globe stallion, Brilliant Light, was having his first start from H. M. Allen's stables at Pukekohe when he finished a good second to Shirley Lawn in the Stewards' Handicap at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday. He could not get clear until weU into the straight, or he might have won. Brilliant Light is a useful sprinter, and he may not be long showing to advantage. At Belfast Double. Deck, a nine-year-old gelding by Jack Potts by the Key de Oro mare, Rose de Oro, is being trained at Belfast by P- G. Wilson. Double Deck has not won since he beat Trixie Milne and Affectation over one mile and a quarter at Westport in December, 1949. Double Deck had only one start last season, but he was not placed. He Is at an age where little improvement can be expected, but he may come into his own at minor meetings. Gay Lyric The Gamble stallion. Gay Lyric, should not be long in winning a race for GS. Smith. He gave an showing when he finished on solidly to be a close fourth to Billy Boy, Pierre and Lahore in the Improvers’ Handicap at Addington last Saturday. Last season Gay Lyric showed worthwhile form, and in 13 starts he had four wins and three placings for £1543 in stakes. Gay Lyric is a good stayer, and it may be in this department that he will show to advantage in the next few weeks.

Did Not Imprese Critic had his first start since being trained by A. Holmes in the Metropolitan Stakes at Addington last Saturday. He was always a long way back, and finished thirteenth. He appeared to run about a lot most of the way. A four-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Nerilihy, Critic won at his three final appearances in Southland last season. A plain-looking pacer, he may require further time before the best is seen of him in Canterbury. Maiden Winnert The four maiden pacers to graduate at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting last week were all by colonial-bred sires. Johnny Logan, the winner of the first division of the non-totallsator race, is a tliree-year-old gelding by Logan Derby (the sire of Johnny Globe) from Suffragette. a useful performer and the dam also of Village King, by Jack Potts from Rebel Girl. Powerful Lady had a most impressive win in the second division from San Marino (Grattan Loyal—Victrix). Powerful Lady is a three-year-old Ally by Pacing Power from Rosalind Maid, by Great Bingen from May Chenault the dam of Commander Scott, Surrey Park, and Scintillante. She was bought for 100 guineas at the yearling sales by her Pokeno trainer, E. R. Smith. Jo McElwvn scored an overdue win in the first division of the Te Rapa Handicap from the consistent Vaiden and Douglas Derby. Jo McElwyn is a six-year-old gelding by Übakim from Josette, a useful performer by David McElwyn from Cyone, the dam also of Toceetie (Smin 40 l-ssec), Cyone Girl, Cyone Maid and Cyone Man, all winners. Peter Amanda caused a surprise in the second division. He is an aged stallion by Peter Bingen from Lady Amanda, by Worthy Bond from Alton Bells, by Gold Bell.
