FULBRIGHT AWARDS

TRAVEL GRANTS TO NEW ZEALANDERS

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, August 29. The United States Educational Foundation in New Zealand to-day announced the award of travel grants under the 1951 Fulbright programme to the following graduates:— Mr Gordon D. Gemmell, soil chemist, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who will take up a research assistantship in metallic corrosion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr Kenneth L. O. Gillion, of the External Affairs Department, who will take up a scholarship awarded to him by the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Medford, Massachusetts. Mr Michael Martin-Smith, of Wellington, who has been offered a graduate assistantship in the chemistry department of the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. Mr MartinSmith intends to take a Ph.D. course in organic chemistry. Mr Arthur S. Radford, an accountant, of Wellington, who will take up a scholarship awarded to him by the New York University School of Retailing, New York. Mr John N. Weadon, junior lecturer in mathematics at Auckland University College, who is to undertake postgraduate study in mathematics at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. Mr Philip J. Wilson, of tl. literary staff of the “New Zealand Listener,” who will undertake post-graduate study in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Miss Judith M. King, formerly dietitian at the Christchurch Public Hospital, who will take up a graduate assistantship in the dietary department of the School of Home Economics at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Miss King and Messrs Gillion, Martin-Smith, Radford, Weadon, and Wilson received their scholarships through the Institute of International Education, New York. Messrs Gemmell, Martin-Smith, Radford, and Weadon left Wellington on August 16. Mr Gillion, Mr Wilson, and Miss King left Auckland on August 25.

Research Scholarship An award has alee -recently been granted to Mr John D. McDonald, principal of the Westport Technical College, who will undertake research in education at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. Mr McDonald has been in England for the last four months and left London by air for Virginia on August 12. Three teachers also benefit. They are Mr Gordon A. Thompson, principal of the Hawera Technical High School, who has an award to enable him to observe American methods of teaching and administration at the post-primary school level; Mr Charles F. Billcliff, a teacher under the Canterbury Education Board, who will exchange with Miss Elenore L Klimm, of the Edward Morley School, West Hartford, Connecticut. Both will teach elementary subjects. Mr Billcliff left last week, and Miss Klimm is expected to arrive in Auckland on August 26. Miss King and Messrs Gillion. McDonald, Martin-Smith, Radford, Thompson, Weadon, and Wilson will each receive a dollar award to help to meet maintenance expenses in the United States.
