CITY COUNCIL TENDERS
BIG EXPENDITURE ON EQUIPMENT
Approval of estimates for this year by the Christchurch City Council has enabled various departments to accept tenders for expensive items of equipment.
The electricity committee is buying switch gear for sub-stations at a cost of £3400, 4500 house service meters (a year’s supply) at £10,668, and lowtension cable to link sub-stations with overhead mains at £lB2l. The works committee is buying two three-ton trucks with steel-lined wooden bodies and hoists at £llBO each, two light waterworks trucks at £1760, a mobile compressor capable of driving two jack hammers at £lO7B, and a tractor loader with a bucket capacity of three-quarters of a cubic yard at £2995. The loader is new to New Zealand. The driver sits immediately behind the bucket with the engine behind him All loaded weight falls on the driving wheels at the front and steering is by the back wheels. A torque converter takes up the load automatically and clutch wear is reduced. The entertainments committee has been able to order a £llOO overhaul
of the civic organ with half the cost covered in the present estimates.
