COPPER WORKS STRIKE
MR TRUMAN APPEALS FOR RESUMPTION
(Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 President Truman to-day urged 58,000 workers to end the strike which has virtually halted the production of copper, lead, and zinc. He ordered the Wage Stabilisation Board to attempt to settle-the dispute over demands for higher pay. The Director of Defence Mobilisation (Mr Charles Edward Wilson) had told the President that the strike would drastically curtail the output of tanks, guns, planes, and other military items. About 95 per cent, of the industry is paralysed by the strike, which has made another 42,000 persons idle.
