EXTRA £l0,000 PROVIDED
WORKS IN KOWAI COUNTY In addition to 'the usual maintenance expenditure, £lO,OOO was provided for various works in the Kowal County, at the monthly meeting of the Kowai County Council. The £lO,OOO provides for the construction of the Ashley deviation (which will eliminate two railway crossings), the sealing of the Ashley end of the As:i-ley-Amberley highway, and the replacing of two bridges which wers. damaged in the recent floods. Mr A. G. Hunt, deputising for Mr C. N. MacKenzie, chairman of the Nassella Tussock Board, waited on the council in connexion with the increase of the contribution to enable the board to earn the £5 for £1 subsidy offered by the Government. The higher subsidy was conditional on all counties raising their contributions. The other three counties, Waipara, Amuri, and Cheviot, had raised their amounts on condition that all did so. A letter was received from the Amberley branch of Federated Farmers supporting the increased contribution. After a full discussion, it was resolved that the extra contribution be made available to establish the principle of the £5 for £1 subsidy. The council recommended that the tender of H. Farrier and Company for £6857 0s 6d for the Ashley deviation and sealing, and the tender of J.' Tait, Ltd., for £2055 7s for the construction of two concrete culverts on the Ashley-Amberley highway be accepted. A general rate of IJd was confirmed for the current year. Cr. G. A. McLean was appointed the council’s delegate to the South Island Local Bodies' Conference at Greymouth.
