TREATMENT OF TRADE WASTE
CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT WELLINGTON The attention of the Government had been drawn by the inter-depart-mental pollution committee to the difficulties, under the existing legislation, of preventing a progressive increase in pollution of both inland and coastal waters, said a letter from the Secretary of Marine (Mr W. C. Smith) which was discussed at a meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board. The Counties’ Association, independently, had made representations on the matlei l •, chiefly in the interests of farmers who in some localities found facilities for watering stock menaced by pollution, the letter said. The Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board had suggested that uniform principles on the question of receipt and treatment of trade waste by local authorities might be set out in general legislation. It was clear that the provision of the Municipal Corporations Act, and the Counties "Act, were insufficient for adequate control of drainage in increasingly industrialised communities.
The board agreed to a suggestion in the letter that it be represented at a conference in Wellington on August 31 at which suggestions could be discussed. The meeting will be attended by engineers of the Auckland Metropolitan, Hutt Valley, and Christchurch Drainage Boards, representatives of the Municipal, Counties and Harbours Associations, and the inter-depart-mental committee.
