CARE OF CHILD HEALTH

INCREASED INTEREST NOTED

VISITING SPECIALIST’S VIEWS

Dr. Howard Williams, director of clinical research at the Children's Hospital, Melbourne—probably one of the biggest children’s hospitals in the world—considers that a society may be judged on the degree of care it extends to its women and children. The care of these groups he considers to be of fundamental Importance to a community.

Dr. Williams is visiting Christchurch to attend a three-day course in pediatrics, which will open to-day. He will be the guest speaker. About 60 doctors from all parts of New Zealand, are expected to attend the course, which is being organised by the Post-Graduate Committee of the Christchurch Hospital, in association with the New Zealand Pediatric Society. Dr. Williams said that, In Australia, the importance of child health had been increasingly recognised in the last three or four years. The best evidence of this trend had been the establishment of a- Federal chair of child health at the University of Sydney about two years ago. U.S. and Scandinavian Lead America and the Scandinavian countries had led the world in realising that the child was an important being in the community, said Dr. Williams. It had only been during the Second World War that Britain had come to this realisation, and in the last eight or nine years about eight or nine child health departments had been opened in British universities. As developments in Britain often set a pattern for life in Australia and New Zealand, it was natural that there should now be a growing interest in this field in these countries. The Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has 260 beds for acute cases (of which there are about 9000 admissions a year), and two convalescent departments with a total of 230 beds. The total annual running cost is about £400,000. of which 20 per cent, is provided from Government funds.

Dr. Williams is accompanied by his wife, who is a specialist in radiology.
