HUMANE SLAUGHTER

Sir,—l read with much satisfaction and thankfulness the announcement by the Department of Agriculture that regulations had been gazetted making it compulsory to stun cattle and pigs killed at freezing works and abattoirs. This is a reform long overdue in New Zealand. All concerned at the old cruel methods will be gratefui to the Minister of Agriculture and his department for their action. In 1936 or 1937 the writer was a member of a deputation from the federated Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which met the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) to ask that humane slaughtering be made compulsory as in England; but nothing was done. Our whole economy is based upon the animals, which are, at the least, entitled to a merciful death. It remained for a "Tory” Government to mete out this act of justice.—Yours, etc., F. J. MARFELL.
