COLLISION ON LEVEL CROSSING
BOY SUFFERS SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES
A small boy suffered serious head injuries when the Christchurch-Picton express struck a motor-car on the level crossing at Stewarts Guhy about 9 a.m. yesterday. He was Kenneth Coombes. aged three, a son of Mrs Ellen May Coombes. of 86 Estuary road, South Brighton, who was driving the car. Although the boy was put on the seriously ill list when admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, he was said to be progressing satisfactorily last evening. There were four persons in the car' Mr J. S. Weir, of 30 Montrose street. Sydenham. Mrs Coombes and her two children. Jean, aged six, and Kenneth. The party was driving to the Stewarts Gully station when the car stalled on the crossing. They all got out of the car and were pushing it off the crossing when Mrs Coombes saw the express bearing down on them It is believed that the boy was caught up in the debris and thrown some distance from the car.
7716 car. which was completely wrecked, was swept by the front of the engine to the far side of the road, where it broke through a cattle stop and landed 'in the pit.
After stopping for a short time the train went on to Rangiora, where the engine was replaced.
