Mr Nehru Explains India’s Attitude (N.Z. Prstt Asiociation—Copyright) (Rec, 11 p.m.) NEW DELHI, August 27. The Prime Minister of India (Mr Nehru) announced in Parliament to-day the Government’! decision not to sign the proposed Japanese Peace Treaty nor participate in the Sail Francisco conference. He said the decision Wks made because the United States accepted none of the major suggestions put forward by India. Mr Nehru also announced that immediately after Japan had attained independent status India would make a declaration terminating the state of war between India and Japan and would later negotiate a simple bilateral treaty with Japan. Mr Nehru read to the House the text of India’s final communication to the United States, which was published in Washington last night. “I regret the premature release of our reply as well as part of other communications, which has unfortunately already taken place In other countries,” he said. The House cheered two statements ih the Indian reply read by Mr Nehru. They were: “The terms of the treaty should concede to Japan a position of honour, equality, and contentment among the community of free nations” and “The Government of India attaches greatest importance to a treaty providing that Formosa should be returned to China.”
