FRENCH TRAIN WRECK

20 PERSONS DEAD; 40 INJURED

PARIS, August 24. An express train ploughed into the rear of another at 55 miles an hour at Metz to-day, killing 20 persons and injuring 40. Wheij a Frankfurt-Paris train, loaded with French and American troops was held up by a signal, railway workers exploded fireworks and flashed light signals in an effort to stop a Basle-Calais train following close behind, but they were too late. The luggage van and two coaches of the Frankfurt-Paris train were wrecked. Bodies were found more than 60ft from the scene. Several of the injured were scalded by escaping steam. All the casualties were in the Frankfurt-Paris train. Most were soldiers. Five American soldiers were killed and several were injured. French railway headquarters in Paris said that the cause of the accident was being investigated. They corrected earlier reports that the first train had been derailed and said that it had stopped in obedience to a signal.
