VICTORIA BEATS SOUTHLAND
MARGIN OF FOUR GOALS
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 5. Hie touring Victorian Association football team scored a convincing win over Southland by 4 goals to 0 at the Invercargill Show Grounds on Saturday afternoon. The match was played in fine weather before a record attendance for a Southland match. Had the Victorians been better accustomed to heavy grounds, the score would undoubtedly have been higher. The Victorian forwards sent in many wide and high shots at goal because they found difficulty in keeping balance bn the rather greasy ground. For Victoria, D. Stoddart, the centre forward, scored three goals, and J. Wilson, the outside right, scored one. The half-time score was 2-0. The Southland forwards had few opportunities of scoring. In the second half, the Southland forwards saw a little more of the ball. A goal made and scored by D. Ottley. the outside left, was disallowed by the refereb, Mr E. Tombs. Ottley having kicked the ball from Scott’s hands. For most of the match the Victorian forwards were attacking. The Southland defence played strongly. R. Morrison, the captain and centre half, was outstanding, and B. Pope, the Southland goal-keeper, played brilliantly. He effected some very difficult clearances with seeming ease and made the most of a long kick. The Victorian forwards were always dangerous near the goal, but their, shots were far from accurate. Stoddard seemed to be the most accurate and kept Pope on edge throughout the match. Alec Barr (captain), on the left wing, and Wilson on the right were fast and their centring kicks were good. Wilson scored one goal in the first half, but many of his other shots were well saved by Pope.
