WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) FAILURE TO RETURN INCOME The Commissioner of Taxes was represented by Mr A. W. Brown in prosecutions for failing to make returna of income. _ . _. Joseph Boyd, a barman, was fined £8 on each of two charges of failing to return income in 194# and 1960. Mr Browa said his income was between £4OO and £5OO a year, and default assessments had been made back to 1944, Boyd pleaded guilty. Joseph Richard Gaskin, a carpenter, was cnarged with failing to make a return in 1860 and was fined £5. Mr Brown said he was an undischarged bsnkru.it j but he had Received more than the taxable amount and his wife also had an income of £3OO a year. Mr D. H. Godfrey said a retired bank manager was to have made the return. Wilful evasion was not involved. Robert George Standeven, a labourer, waa charged on three counts for the yesr» 1948, 1949, and 1950. He was fined £2. £3. and £5 respectively. Mr Brown said Standeven's income for 1949 was £440 and in another year £350. Repeated warnings had been sent without response. It seemed a case of straight-out neglect. DEFECTIVE WASTE PIPE A. Chisholm was fined £1 for failing to replace a defective waste pipe on ■ wash basin at 15 Strickland street. Mr E. C. Champion (for the Christchurch Drainage Board) said an inspector found water from the pipe coming out underneath a veranda. Mr J. R. L. Campbell said Chisholm had had diffleutty about tenants in tho house and now that the place had been vacated the plumbing could be fixed.
