DEMONSTRATION IN MANILA
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) MANILA, July 18. An effigy of Mr John Foster Dulles was burned last night at a Liberal Youth League rally in protest against the Japanese Peace Treaty draft.
The treaty has been branded as unacceptable by the Philippine Government.
About 2000 persons attended the rally in which speakers denounced Mr Dulles, special Republican adviser to the State Department, and principal architect of the proposed treaty. The President (Mr Elpidio Quirino) yesterday conferred with the Council of State, which is the nation's highest advisory body, to discuss the, draft. He criticised the draft for fail* ing to provide sufficient guarantees for security of the Philippines, which, he said, was “even more important than reparations.” However, he gave no indication that the Government would relent in its demands for war damages.
