CHARGE AGAINST J. HEALY

SUBMISSIONS FOR DEFENCE

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 4. Making the preliminary submission that there was no case against James Healy, general secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, his counsel, Mr Simon Isaacs, told a special Federal Court to-day that if the Crown allegations succeeded, no trade union official would ever be safe in the discharge of his union duties. Healy has pleaded not guilty to four charges under the Crimes Act arising from Australian waterfront reaction to the New Zealand strike. Mr Isaacs said that in one charge, a single statement made by Healy in a report to his Federal Council had been taken as an encouragement of the commission of a crime. If this were valid everybody who spoke at the council meeting would be guilty of conspiring under the Crimes Act.
