FIERCE BATTLE IN KOREA
FOURTH DAY OF ACTION
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) TOKYO, July 4 A fierce battle raged into its fourth day to-day among the barren mountain peaks below Pyonggang, on the central front in Korea, as American troops fought to dislodge die-hard Communists. American shock troops took and held the highest peak below Pyonggang yesterday, beat off Communist coun-ter-attacks during the night, and went out again to-day to dig the stubborn Chinese from their massive bunkers. In the lesser surrounding peaks bloody hand-to-hqpd combat raged through the hillsides of the old “Iron triangle.” There was no slackening of the war and the Americans observed Independence Day to the roar of guns, bombs, and tanks. United Nations artillery on the’east central front blazed anew last night in one of the biggest gun duels in weeks. The Allies knocked out four of six enemy tanks north of Yanggu. An Eighth Army snbkesman said that last week the Allies inflicted an estimated 8650 Communist casualties.
