TRANSIT HOUSES AT LINWOOD

BLOCK OF 44 TO BE BUILT

Forty-four transit houses—l 6 singlefamily houses and 14 two-family houses —are to be built in Linwood. They will be placed about a loop road among lawns and shrubs on a five and a half acre block of land. The houses will be within two and a half miles of Cathedral square on an extension of Jollie street, to the east of Buckley’s road. The transit houses will be constructed of timber, sheathed externally with weatherboards and asbestos-cement sidings. They will have ti’ed roofs. Each single-family house will have a living room with a kitchenette opening off it, three double bedrooms, a bathroom-laundry and a lavatory. The two-family houses Will each have a living room with kitchenette, two double bedrooms and a bathroom. One separate laundry is to be shared by the tenants of each two-family house. A too'shed will be provided for each unit. Colour schemes are to be employed >n exterior decoration to give harmony to the whole block and to provide as pleasing an appearance as possible. General service reticulation of the bkek is now in hand.

These buildings will differ from the type of transit housing previously proposed in that they are in single-family and two-family blocks instead of fourfamily b’oeks. These houses are stated to be of a good standard, and although smaller than the usual State rental houses, will provide comfortable homes for some of the manv people urgently awaiting accommodation.
