VOLUNTEERS AT WELLINGTON
OFFERS MADE TO MAYOR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. L. Macalister) has already received offers by telephone from persons volunteering for the citizens’ emergency reserve to be established in the present Indus\.rial crisis. 1 Mr Macalister said to-night that all citizens would have been greatly moved by the dastardly events in the Auckland district. He was sure that the call for volunteers for the citizens emergency reserve would meet with a ready response in Wellington. He appealed to all citizens for support in restraining intimidators. “At present we have a few intimidating many,” he said. “We shou d reverse that order—it is for the many to tell the few where they get off. The Mayor suggested that any. person intimidated by intruders should call in his neighbours immediately, and invite the in'imidator to express his views in front of them all. Similarly, a workman on a job should call his mates round him at once. “If the intimidator has anything to say, let him sav it in front of everyone.” Mr Macal'ster added: “We do not want gangsterism in this city, and by standing together the citizens can prevent it. I ask all citizens who can help in the formation of the citizens’ emergency reserve to register at the Town Hall.” He said registrations would be received et 9 a.m. They would be recorded by women helpers who had offered their services for this work. The exact duties anyone volunteering would be asked to undertake would be announced soon. "I fully realise that if the services of women are required, I have only to ask, and will be forthcoming immediately,” he added.
