BRIDGE AT SWANNS ROAD

FOUNDATION TESTS AUTHORISED

The new Swann’s road bridge will be practically at right angles to the river. This was decided by the City Council last evening after receiving a long report on two plans from the works committee. Authority was given to carry out foundation tests, including the driving of test piles. A count of traffic on April 17 showed that four-fifths of the traffic came from Avonside drive on the north- of that traffic, two-thirds was from Retreat road. The estimated cost of the bridge was £15,200. A single span might be economically designed. Some road widening in front of the bridge would be needed. The bridge could be built with the old bridge m position except for the slight widening of the south-west corner. Cr. G. Manning said he favoured the second scheme at first, but after hearing the engineers 'and the estimate that the first scheme was £5OOO cheaper he was compelled to agree with the committee’s recommendation.
