FORBURY PARK CLUB

VAN DIEMAN WINS TWO RACES

From Our Own Reporter DUNEDIN, April 30. Van Dieman made two sterling efforts at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting to-day when he won the Ritchie Memorial Hanoicap and the Flying Handicap. In both of them he was a good way from the leaders with half a mile to run, but he produced a grand finishing run to win with somethng in hand. Van Dieman has been a bargain horse for his Prebbleton owner-trainer, C. C. Devine, who exercised the purchase clause in his lease of the horse last November. Van Dieman has had a useful record this season, and in 18 starts he has had six wins and three placings for £4405 in stakes. The U. Scott colt will probably be put aside now until next season, when he will probably win his way to a very tight mark.

The surprise of the day was the defeat of Soangetaha in the St. Clair Handicap. He was an odds-on favourite for the race, but had a shocking passage. He began smartly, but lost his position, and he found the task of catching Tactician beyond him once he got clear. The meeting was held in fine but cool weather before a good crowd. The track was in excellent order in spite of the heavy rain that had fallen for the last week, and it improved during the day. In a pool of 12,694 tickets on the doubles totalisator. 1592 were invested an Van Dieman, whiner of the Ritchie Memorial Handicap. The favourite for the race, Maida Dillon, hftd £3472 invested on her chance. All the tickets were redeemed, and 420 ware placed on the Walnut Hall-Te Maru bracket. The Van Dleman-Walnut Hall combination returned £24 19s for £l. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £76,598, including £6347 on the double, and £l7l from off-course investments, compared with £99,450 on the first day of the winter meeting last year, I which was held on a Saturday. L. F. Berkett. driver of Sandyshore in the Victory Handicap, was fined £lO for excessive and unnecessary use of the whip on the horse. He was also warned that if there was a repetition of that behaviour his licence would be cancelled. Van Dleman Wins Van Dieman made amends for his defeats at the Canterbury Park meeting in March, when he won the Ritchie Memorial Handicap in convincing style. The U Scott four-year-old was giving the leaders about eight lengths with three furlongs to run, but he won with something in hand. Morano and Young Charles, which had been In the lead throughout, still had charge at the straight entrance from Duncraig, Maida Dillon, Van Dleman (wide out), Ada Scott, Kublai Khan, and Prince Hall. Van Dieman ranged alongside Young Charles and Morano Inside the furlong and soon settled the issue. It was a grand effort by Van Dieman, and he appears to be one of the brightest staying prospects in commission. Young Charles held on for second, a length back. He began better than usual and he was on the outside of Morano’s wheel throughout. He looked a winner inside the furlong, but failed to hold off Van Dieman's run.

Morano made all the pace, but he failed to produce the finishing run which has marked most of his successes. Ada Scott came from a long way back in the middle stages to be a head back fourth, and Prince Hall, which had been towarda the rear most of the way, finished solidly for fifth, ahead of Kublai Khan, Victory Dale, Duncraig, and Maida Dillon the latter was made a strong favourite and she was handy to the leaders all the way. She failed to run on in the straight, however, and finished well back. Admiral Peterson was the only horse which failed to leave the mark correctly, although Ada Scott waa alow.

Flying Handicap Van Dleman followed up his win in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap with an equally impressive victory in the Flying Handicap. He was a little slow at the start, and with five furlongs to run he etill had nine horses in front of him Zulu, Baby Grand, Maori Home, and Duncraig went away from the field running down the back, and Van Dieman was still giving them a big start. He moved up smartly wide out to be In fourth place behind Zulu, Maori Home, and Duncraig at the straight entrance, where Ada Scott and Johnny Globe were handiest of the others. Van Dleman won by two lengths from Ada Scott. Zulu was another length back, third, with a neck to Maori Home. Duncraig was right up next, ahead of Johnny Globe, Gough's Pride, and Prince Hall.

Ada Scott lost her position in the early running and her second placing Was a worthwhile effort. With a little luck she might have made Van Dieman’s task more difficult.

Zulu broke at the start, but did not lose much ground, and he made most of the pace. Maori Home and Duncraig recorded useful efforts, and Johnny Globe proved himself a brilliant three-year-old. He broke at the start and was at the rear of the field at the end of a furlong. He made a great run, wide out, over the final four furlongs, and he did extremely well to finish so close to the leaders. Gough’s Pride ran a surprisingly good race after a spell.

Soangetaha Beaten Soangetaha carried almost half the win pool in the St. Clair Handicap, but he was well beaten by Tactician, which has not raced with much luck lately. The latter was slow away, but moved up to take over the running from Pierre with seven furlongs to run, and at the straight entrance he was ahead of Landlight, Pierre. Allanah, and Worth)’ Gaillard, with Soangetaha hemmed in on the fence. Soangetaha got clear approaching the furlong, but he failed to finish on as well as expected, and he was two lengths behind Tactician at the post. Soangetaha accelerated very fast from 24 yards, and he was challenging the leaders at the end of a furlong and a half. D. G. Jones steadied him in behind Pierre with a mile and a quarter to run, and he lost his position shortly after. He should be improved by the run and can be expected to make a better showing in his next race. Worthy Gaillard came home strongly for third, a Mngth clear of Allanah, with Scott Wrack and Merrymaker together next, ahead of Happy Joe, Billy Boy, and Eileen Lillian. Merrymaker, Happy Joe, and Melton lost ground at the start. Just Lasted Walnut Hall was having his first start since joining M. Holmes’s team, when he was successful in the Renown Handicap. He began smartly, and was in the lead st the end of half a furlong. He still led at the straight entrance, where Te Arawhata, Fillmore, Tutta Bella, Victory Song, Burn’s Night. Proprietor, Lady Mavourneen (wide out), and Te Maru were all handy. Walnut Hall just lasted long enough to hold off the unlucky Burn 1 * Night by a nose.

half a mile to run, but ha was handy to the leaders at the straight entrance. He forced his way through on the rails and finished on resolutely, but just failed to catch the winner. Fillmore held on well under pressure for third, a length and a half back, with another length to Proprietor, Te Maru was right up next, ahead of Victory Song. Tutta Bella, Keymaster, and Ben’s Son. Te Arawhata broke at the start, and he went round the field to challenge Walnut Hall in the lead with five furlongs to run. He could not sustain his run and finished well back. Te Maru, Keymaster, Stirling Castle, and Ben’s Son also lost ground at the start. Won Comfortably Daredevil and- Bull's Eye drew right away from the remainder of the field in the Victory Handicap, and they had the finish to themselves. Daredevil finished on better than Bull's Eye and he won by three lengths. Fourth Brigade was another 12 lengths back, ahead of Lucky Bill, with three lengths to Mananuas, which was clear of Precaution, Lillian Mac, and Sandy’s Epic together. Bull’s Eye began smartly from 60 yards, and at the end of two furlongs he was in fifth place behind Mamanuas, Rowan McCoy, Fourth Brigade, and Lillian Mae. Bulls Eye continued his run to take the lead with five furlongs to' run. With three furlongs to run he was joined by Daredevil, and they went right away from the others.

Fourth Brigade was having his first start since last October, and tie can be expected to Improve soon. Rakautlka, Sandy’s Epie, Precaution, and Daredevil wete slow away, and Sandyshore broke in the running. Dan Martin broke at the start, and was pulled up. Results
