EVENTFUL RACE AT NELSON

FAILURE OF HURDLERS

"The Press Special Service _. NELSON, April 15. The running of the First Hack Hurdles on the first day of the Nelson Jockey Club s meeting on Saturday put the crowd in a happy mood for the day. and is without a parallel since a meeting at Rang!ora about 40 years ago. when no runner completed the course in the hurdle race. The hot favourite. Leeston, ran off at the first fence, and was followed by Arctic Circle and Cardross. Master Mishm dropped his rider, and the only other runner, Young John, very nearly fell. Young John screwed and bucked over the remaining fences and was within an ace of crashing at the last. Arctic Circle and Leeston were taken back to the first fence, being followed some minutes later by Cardross, the course staff having by this time removed the fence in front of the stands. Leeston ran off again, but Arctic Circle scrambled over, ran through a gap at the next fence, and then appeared to be stuck at the fence near the five furlongs, where he baulked four times before bucking over. He finished several minutes after Young John. At his third attempt Leeston got . ver the first fence, but he ran off at the five furlongs. He was taken back to finish the course three or four minutes after Arctic Circle. Some time later. Cardross went round alone to gain fourth prize. The pay-out was held up for a few minutes while the stipendiary steward called the judicial committee together to decide whether the second, third, and fourth horses could be said to have completed the course, but_a liberal interpretation of Rule 291 (I), sub-section B, seemed to fit the case very well, and the pay-out on the first and second horses pleased everyone.
