FIFTY YEARS AT SEA
MASTER OF OVERSEAS SHIP
Master mariners and chief engineers from ships in port at Lyttelton on Saturday entertained Captain F. M. Milnes, master of the overseas ship Ramon de Larrinaga, who that day had completed 50 years at sea. The harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) was also present. In 1901 Captain Milnes signed on the barque Killarney as an apprentice and was in that ship when shd called at Lyttelton in L?O4. On completing his apprenticeship he served with various shipping companies. Thirty years ago he was appointed to his first command, the Maria de Larrinaga and he has remained with the Larrinaga Shipping Company since then. He was in command of the steamer Telefora when that vessel was torpedoed off the Canary Islands in 1941, three of the crew being killed.
