SHORT VISIT TO TOKYO
GENERAL RIDGWAY BACK IN KOREA TOKYO, April 13. Lieutenant-General Matthew B. Ridgway, the new United Nations Supreme Commander, returned to Korea to-day after a brief visit to Japan. General Ridgway spent only a few hours in Tokyo, and he was with General MacArthur for most of the time. His sudden return to Korea caused surprise in Tokyo. Lieutenant-General James van Fleet, who will succeed General Ridgway as commander of the Bth Army, left California by air to take up his appointment
American Tourists’ Spending.— About 300,000 American tourists spent 230,000,000 dollars in Western Europe last year. The Economic Co-operation Administration said this was about 30 per cent, more than American travellers spent in 1940.—Washington, April 12.
