OLDEST HORSE RACE IN BRITAIN

GIRL COMPETITOR WINS WOLD NEWTON. YORKSHIRE. A 17-year-old girl living here hat won the oldest horse-race in Britain. She is Yvonne Robson, victor at her first attempt in the 432-year-old Kiplincotes Derby, run by tradition on the third Thursday in March over a four-and-a-half-mile course on the Yorkshire Wolds. Yvonne Robson the only woman competitor, finished 600 yards ahead of last year’s winner, and beat her farmer-father into fourth place. She said: “It’s not the prize-money tnat matters to me, but the honour of winning.” The seven entrants each paid £4 3s. to compete. The first prize was £5 12s—the interest on money invested in shares. “In the old days the invested money brought in a lot more than it does now,” explained Mr Robson.
