PROBLEMS IN RANGIORA COUNTY > COUNCIL RECEIVES COMPLAINTS ‘ Numerous complaints about flooding and drainage were received from property owners in the Rangiora County, at the monthly meeting of the Rang>ora County Council, yesterday. After discussing some of' them the Council decided to hold a two-day tour of inspection of the affected areas and then to discuss the nroblems with the North Canterbury Catchment Board. April 27 was set down for the first day of inspection. _ . Two property owners from Flaxton wrote complaining of floodwaters on their farms. One suggested that a sun vey be made to ascertain what could be done to relieve the situation. The flooding occurred regularly every few years, and as the wheat growing potential for the land was eetunated at4o,oon bushels, it was vital that the flooding be prevented. The letter also said that the existing drains appeared to be inadequate. Another property owner said that his land was rendered useless for a number of months in some years by flooding, and that the size of his dairy herd was greatly restricted. Another letter was received written on behalf of property holders from the south end of Tuahiwi and complaining of flooding in this area. The water came from the |Tuahiwi drain, said the letter. It was suggested that an outlet to xn old course of the drain oe opened up. An invitation to attend an open meeting of the Ohoka and District Federated Farmers, in May, which would be attended by other local bpdies, to discuss local drainage problems, was received. It was decided that as many of the council as possible should attend. A letter was received from the North Canterbury Catchment Board saying that the council’s proposal to install a pump at Mclntosh’s drain, near Kaiapoi, had met with approval at the board’s last meeting, and that the board would allow subsidies of £2 for £1 for installation, and £1 for £2 for maintenance. Accounts amounting to £4271 7s 6d were passed for payment.
