REVIEW OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT
PROPOSALS EXPECTED SHORTLY “The Press" Special Service
WELLINGTON, April 11. “The whole question of local government reorganisation and amalgamation is under review, and I hope to complete definite proposals shortly and bring them forward in such a way that all the interests cqncemed will have an opportunity to discuss them before any final moves are made,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin) to-day.
Mr Bodkin said that he was not in a position to state what changes in procedure were being considered, but they would be announced as soon as investigations were complete. The question was an important one, for upon it depended the future development of local government in New Zealand over a long period. It could not, therefore, be hurried and every opportunity must be given for discussion.
It could be taken for granted that every effort would be made to give effect to the recommendations of the Municipal Association and the New Zealand Counties’ Association.
