“Step To Far Eastern
Munich” (Rec. 1 am.) LONDON, April IL In the United States Republican supporters of Genera} MacArthur bitterly criticised the President’s action, Senator William Knqwland (California) said Genera] MacArthur's removal might be a preliminary step tp a Far Pastern Munich. It was a great victory for the Secretary of State 'Mr Dean Acheson) and hi? Far Eastern policies, “By his action, the President has yielded to British and American critics of General MacArthur, Our position ip Japan and th# whole of the Far East is placed in jeopardy. When General MacArthur returns home, the American people will have the opportunity to pay him the great honour and respect in which he is held by them.” Senator Bourke Hickenlooper (Iowa) a member pf the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said: “It is another of the series of tragic blunders of the Administration and the State Department m this important period. General MacArthur probably is the ablest man in the world to-day on the military and political situation in the Orient.’’ Senator Hickenlboper added that the action amounted to a catastrophe and would certainly hearten Russia. Senator Robert Taft (Ohio) said it was a tragic error, not only because of the loss of one of the greatest military leaders in United States history, but because it Indicated a determination to continue the wavering, planless course tn the Far East whjen pointed toward either q stalemate or ignominious concession? to the Chinese Communista.
