“Necessity Regretted”
Mr Truman said he regretted having to relieve General MacArthur because the Generars place in history as one of the greatest commanders was fully established. “The nation owes him a debt of gratitude for the distinguished and exceptional service which he has rendered his country in a post of great responsibility. For that reason I regret the necessity for the action I feel compelled to take in his case.” The President’s order telegraphed to General MacArthur over the Army network said; “You will turn over your commands effective at once to Lieutenant-General Matthew Ridgway. Yon are authorised to have Issued such orders as are necessary to complete desired travel to such places as you select. My reasons for your replacement will be made public concurrently with the delivery to you of the foregoing order,”
