FIGHTING IN KOREA
Enemy Stand At Reservoir (Rec. 1 ajj».) TOKYO. April 11. Allied air and artillery attacks have destroyed the Chinese Communist headquarters town of Chorwon, on the central front, but a fanatical stand at Hwachon reservoir has stalled the Al’ lied drive in that area, front line dispatches reported to-day. Chorwon, 17 miles north of the 38th parallel, was one of the southern an. chors of the enemy’s triangular buildup area in North Korea, from which he had been expected to launch a mighty counter-offensive. Hwaehon, 29 miles to the south-east, was the other. Hwachon was abandoned earlier this Bth Army dispatch reported that Chinese Communists had abandoned the town of Inje, 11 miles south-east of the eastern end of the reservoir, but they fought bitterly south-weirt of Tnje to block American advances on that sector. A news blackout obscured details of the Hwachon fighting, and on the process of the floodwaters released by the enemy’s opening of the Hwachon towards the Yapggu, at its Turkish -troops surged across the Hantan river south-west of Chorwon •nd pressed northward. . Eighth Army headquarters said that American, British, and Turkish troops jumped off ip limited attacks after a week-long lull but ran into three «mny counter-attacks tart night and this morning.
